An officer from Anenii-Noi Police Inspectorate was detained for 72 hours and placed in the NAC detention center, after he was identified as suspect in a case of influence peddling. The police officer was denounced by a man from whom he allegedly asked 11 000 lei to help him solve a search case.
In fact, the policeman would have claimed that he has influence on certain officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, whom he could determine to allow the wife of the whistleblower, wanted by the police, to enter the country unimpeded. According to the whistleblower, the inspector allegedly suggested to call him when his wife arrives at the border of the Republic of Moldova to arrange her entry without being detained.
The operation of detention took place in the afternoon of January 13 on the territory of the gas station in Anenii-Noi. At the summons of the NAC officers, the policeman voluntary handed over the entire amount of money of 11 000 lei that he had received.
A criminal investigation was initiated pursuant to art. 326 - influence peddling. If found guilty, he faces up to 7 years in prison.
We remind that every person is presumed to be innocent until the final and irrevocable decision of the court is pronounced.
The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office is conducting the criminal investigation. In 2020, 43 employees of the MIA were criminally investigated by the NAC and prosecutors, being suspected in committing corruption crimes.
