Two men from the capital have been detained by the NAC officers and anti-corruption prosecutors in case of influence peddling. The suspects would have exterted pressure on an economic agent, demending from him 10 000 lei per month to protect from posssible checks and sanctions of some state institutions.
According to the whistleblower, who has administered the canteen at Uzinelor street, everything began last year, when a former employee of a base situated on the same street, allegedly offered protection from unexpected checks of certain state institutions. He alleged that he could influence public figures from the Police, the National Agency for Food Safety, the Civil Protection and Emergency Situations Service and other control bodies not to carry out checks and not to impose sanctions if they detect irregularities in the administration of the canteen. In order to solve the alleged problems, he, together with his accomplices, allegedly demanded a monthly protection fee in the amount of 10,000 lei.
Based on the witness statements, the NAC and prosecutors have initiated investigations and started a criminal prosecution on influence peddling. During 3 months, under the NAC control, the whistleblower transmitted the suspects, in installments, 27 000 lei. On January 20, when transmitting the last tranche of 10 000 lei, both men were detained, being placed for 72 hours in the detention center of the NAC, if found guilty, they face up to 7 years in prison or a criminal fine.
