A new study of court verdicts made by the NAC shows that the courts were largely confronted with cases of petty corruption
18.05.2021 753 ViewsThe analysis of verdicts, handed down within cases of corruption and acts related to corruption, shows that influence peddling is the most frequent verdict, made by courts in 2020. Therefore, the biggest number of verdicts given were for persons who committed influence peddling and active corruption crimes, followed by verdicts for passive corruption. The data have been provided in the recent study, elaborated by the Analytical Directorate of the NAC.
According to the study, among the persons charged with corruption acts and corruption-related acts, there are employees who have positions of responsibility, some of them hold management positions. Thus, it was found out that, in exchange for obtaining some illicit benefits, the persons employed in the public sector allegedly were ready to risk the positions they hold.
In most of the cases, the courts expressed their opinion on corruption cases when the amount of the bribe was low. The acts of corruption in grand proportions were also found among analyzed sentences, and this fact may create a risk of non-criminal prosecution of large corrupt officials.
The study was developed with the support of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office. Different aspects connected to delivered verdicts in corruption cases, conclusions and recommendations of specialists, can be found in the attached document (https://cna.md/public/files/Studiusentinte2020b5acd.pdf ).
